Newborn Diapers: A Guide to the Right Size and Material

Blöjor för nyfödda: guide till rätt storlek och material

The first weeks with a newborn are intense — and one of the practical questions that comes up right away is: which diaper should we use? Many parents buy a big box in advance, only to find their baby has outgrown it in just a few weeks, or that a certain diaper chafes and causes a rash. This guide helps you choose the right size and material from the start — saving you both money and restless nights.

How do you choose a diaper size for a newborn?

Diaper size is always based on your baby's weight — not age. A newborn can weigh anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 kg, and their body changes fast. The Bammies size guide for the littlest ones:

• The Mini (3–5 kg) — for the very smallest, including babies born prematurely. A slimmer cut and softer material around the legs.

• The Newborn (4–7 kg) — the standard newborn size. Cut to leave room for the umbilical cord stump until it falls off.

• The Baby (6–9 kg) — the next step up. Most babies are ready around 2–3 months of age.

Rule of thumb: if the diaper leaves red marks around the legs or waist, it's time to go up a size. Never stock up too heavily on one size — newborns grow fast!

Why does material matter extra for newborns?

Newborn skin is thinner, more sensitive, and absorbs substances more easily than adult skin. That means the diaper's innermost material — the layer sitting directly against the skin — plays a crucial role. Many conventional diapers contain perfume, lotion, and synthetic additives that can irritate newborn skin, especially in babies prone to atopy or eczema.

The inner surface of Bammies is 100% bamboo — naturally soft, absorbent, and free from perfume, lotion, and chemical additives. All our diapers are Dermatest®-certified (excellent) and OEKO-TEX®-approved for contact with sensitive baby skin.

How often should you change a newborn's diaper?

Newborns pee and poop often — on average 8–12 times a day during the first weeks. As a guideline, change the diaper:

• Right away after a poop — never leave a soiled diaper on, no matter how small it is.

• Every 2–3 hours during the day, even without any smell.

• At night: change when needed, but don't disturb sleep unnecessarily if the diaper is holding up.

Tips for avoiding diaper rash in the first weeks

• Choose perfume-free diapers with no lotion and no plastic against the skin.

• Let the skin air out a little at every change — 1–2 minutes is enough.

• Use a mild zinc cream preventively if you notice any redness.

• Check that the leg cuffs are folded outward, not inward against the skin.

Are Bammies suitable for premature babies?

Yes. Bammies The Mini (3–5 kg) is designed with the smallest babies in mind and works for premature babies too. The slim cut gives a good fit without rubbing, and the bamboo material is extra gentle on the sensitive skin premature babies often have.

Common questions about newborn diapers

How many newborn diapers do you need?

Count on 8–12 changes a day during the first weeks. It's a good idea to have 2–3 packs of The Mini and The Newborn on hand, but avoid stockpiling too much — your baby's weight and needs change fast.

Can you use regular diapers straight from birth?

It depends on your baby's weight. If your baby weighs under 3.5 kg, The Mini is the right start. Over 4 kg, The Newborn may fit right away.

How long does the Newborn size last?

Usually 4–8 weeks, but it varies with your baby's growth. Check their weight regularly and go up a size when the marks around the legs start turning red.
