The Best Diapers for Newborns: Which Do You Choose From Day One?

Which diapers are best for newborns? Honest answer: the diaper that's kind to your baby's skin, holds tight when you both need to sleep, and fits your little one's body just right. No "best in test" list can know how your baby is built. But there are a few things that genuinely matter in those first weeks, and that's what we'll walk through here. No fuss, no greenwashing.

What does "the best diaper" actually mean for a newborn?

A newborn goes through many diaper changes a day. Their skin is thin, new and sensitive. What's a small thing for a bigger child can mean red creases in the groin and sleepless nights for a three-week-old.

So when we say "best", we mean three things:

  • Gentle on the skin. Soft material against the skin, no perfume, no lotions.
  • Keeps the wetness away. So the skin stays dry and you get to sleep.
  • Fits right. Fit is half the battle against leaks.

Everything else is a bonus. A nice bonus, but a bonus.

Checklist: five things that make the difference

1. The material against the skin

This is the first thing to look at. Many parents flip the pack over and read about the absorbent core, but it's the innermost layer that actually touches your baby.

In Bammies diapers, the layer against the skin is 100% bamboo. Bamboo fibers are soft, breathable and feel more like a favourite sweater than plastic. Parents describe them as "ultra soft" and say you "can really feel the quality". What's more, the bamboo is processed with natural enzymes, not rayon.

Worth being clear: it's the layer against the skin that's 100% bamboo. The whole diaper isn't. We say what our diapers are, and what they aren't.

2. Absorption and dryness

Newborns pee often, but a little at a time. The diaper needs to pull wetness away from the skin fast, over and over again. Bamboo fibers can absorb up to three times more liquid than regular cotton, and our diapers stay dry for up to 12 hours.

That doesn't mean you should leave a newborn in the same diaper for 12 hours. It means that once the last change of the night is done, there's margin. As one parent wrote: "Used it as a night diaper and it lasted the whole night with no leaks."

3. A fit designed for newborns

A newborn has no waist to speak of, an umbilical stump area that needs leaving alone, and a talent for producing surprises that travel up the back. That's why The Newborn has reinforced leak protection at the back, built to stop those classic blowouts.

Quick fit check:

  • Roughly two fingers' space at the waist. Snug, without gaping.
  • Pull the diaper a little extra high at the back.
  • Fluff out the leak guards around the legs so the elastic isn't folded inward.

4. What the diaper doesn't contain

It's easy to be scared by headlines here, and you don't need to be. It's enough to know what you're avoiding. Bammies diapers are free from perfume, lotions, chlorine, phthalates, parabens, latex, PVC, dyes and alcohol. Bleaching is TCF, meaning completely free from chlorine-based chemicals.

You can tell. The diapers hold a Dermatest "Excellent" rating, and parents tell us about children whose redness and itchy eczema cleared up after switching. "No itching", as Emelie wrote. Many also note that there's hardly any smell at all, unlike the chemical smell some brands have.

5. Less plastic, honestly

We're not going to tell you our diapers contain zero plastic, because they don't. What we can say is that they contain significantly less plastic than regular diapers, that the outer layer is plant-based, and that the packaging is FSC-certified paper instead of plastic film.

And one more thing worth knowing: in Sweden, all disposable diapers are incinerated, whatever the brand. Composting isn't allowed. In that case it's always better to burn sustainably produced biomass than fossil plastic. Less plastic. More logic.

The Mini or The Newborn: which one is right for you?

We have two sizes that usually see you through the first months:

  • The Mini, 3 to 5 kg. For the very smallest and those first weeks at home.
  • The Newborn, 4 to 7 kg. Our classic newborn size with reinforced protection at the back.

Many babies start in The Mini and move on to The Newborn after a few weeks. Our tip: have both at home from the start, so you can test which fits best without any panic at three in the morning.

Two things to keep in mind. Our diapers run slightly larger than many other brands. And the weight range is always a guide. Two babies at 4.5 kg can be built completely differently around the tummy, legs and back. If your baby is between two sizes in open diapers, go for the larger one.

How to test the diaper at home before you decide

Nobody should have to buy a whole monthly box on a hunch. Here's how to run an honest home test:

  • Start with a sample kit. Our sample kit with three diapers comes in every size, including The Mini and The Newborn.
  • Test one night. A night change tells you more about absorption than ten daytime changes.
  • Check the skin after a couple of days. Less redness? Fewer marks on the tummy and thighs? That's the answer you're looking for.
  • Check the fit with the finger rule. Two fingers at the waist, leak guards fluffed out.

Size not right? Get in touch with your baby's weight, age and the size you tried, and we'll send samples in another size at no cost. And if the diaper causes a rash, you get your money back. No risk, just answers.

Common questions about diapers for newborns

How many diapers will you go through?

More than you think in the first weeks. That's why our smallest sizes come with the most diapers per month. Want to do the maths? We've got a separate guide on how many diapers a newborn needs per day.

Are bamboo diapers suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. That's pretty much why Bammies exists. Our founder was a mum whose little one got diaper rash from regular diapers. Soft bamboo against the skin, no perfumes or lotions, and a Dermatest "Excellent" to back it up.

I can see small fibers in the diaper. Is that normal?

Yes, small bamboo fibers can sometimes come loose, a bit like a wool sweater pilling. Completely harmless. In newer production runs we've also pressed the bamboo harder, so the material is even more durable.
