There's no manual for being a parent. But when it comes to diapers, there are a few classic mistakes most of us make at least once — and they're easy to avoid if you know about them in advance.
1. Buying too many diapers in the same size
It's tempting to stock up on a big pile of newborn-size diapers — but newborns grow fast. Plenty of parents end up with hundreds of unused diapers in the wrong size. Instead, buy a little of each size and top up as you go.
2. Waiting too long to change
A diaper that stays on for a long time significantly raises the risk of diaper rash. Urine and stool change the skin's pH and leave it vulnerable to irritation. Change the diaper every 2–3 hours and always right after a poo — no matter how recently you last changed.
3. Ignoring the materials
Most parents choose a diaper based on price or familiarity. But not all diapers are the same. Conventional diapers can contain fragrances, chlorine-bleached fibers and a lot of fossil-based plastic. Choose a diaper made from natural materials without harmful chemicals — it makes a difference for sensitive skin.
4. Fastening the diaper too loose or too tight
A diaper that's too loose leaks. One that's too tight chafes and leaves red marks. You should be able to fit two fingers under the waistband — no more, no less. Also check that the cuffs around the thighs are folded out, not tucked in.
5. Forgetting to let the skin breathe
The skin under the diaper needs air. Let your baby lie diaper-free for a little while every day — on a waterproof surface — and dry the skin thoroughly after every change. Moisture is the most common cause of diaper rash.
